Week-by-week stages of a dental implant procedure explained by a dentist

Understanding the stages of a dental implant procedure can help ease anxiety and set realistic expectations before treatment begins. While dental implants are a long-term solution, the process happens gradually to ensure proper healing and lasting results.

At South Tweed Dental, we believe patients feel more confident when they know what's coming next. From the initial consultation to the final crown placement, each stage of the dental implant procedure plays an important role in achieving a strong, natural-looking outcome. This week-by-week breakdown explains what most patients can expect throughout their implant journey.

Week 1 - Consultation and Planning

Your dentist assesses your oral health, takes scans, and creates a personalised implant plan. During this visit, we'll determine if you're a suitable candidate for dental implants and discuss what the treatment will involve.

Week 2 – Implant Placement

The implant is carefully placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Most patients experience minimal discomfort. The procedure typically takes about an hour per implant, and you'll be able to return home the same day.

Weeks 3–12 – Healing and Integration

During this phase, the implant fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration. This is the most critical period for successful implant treatment. You'll need to maintain excellent oral hygiene and follow all post-operative care instructions to ensure proper healing.

Final Stage – Crown Placement

Once healing is complete, a custom dental crown is attached to restore function and appearance. The crown is carefully designed to match your natural teeth in colour, shape, and size, giving you a seamless smile.

Long-Term Care After the Procedure

Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits help ensure your implant lasts for many years. If you already have dentures, we can coordinate implant treatment with denture reline or replacement if needed.
