Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease is inflammation of the gums and surrounding areas, which may affect the way teeth are supported in the jaw. It is the most common cause of tooth loss and if signs of gum disease are noticed, it is important to have your symptoms, gums and medical history assessed to detect this condition as early as possible. The type of treatment you receive will depend on the severity of gum disease.

Gingivitis is a form of periodontal disease, in such cases we will clean your teeth using specialized ultrasonic scalers and conventional hand scalers as well as providing advice on how to brush and floss effectively. However, if left untreated this can progress to periodontitis, requiring more extensive cleaning to remove bacteria, plaque and hardened deposits from deeper pockets surrounding each tooth.

Cleaning these deeper pockets and hardened deposits are not possible to do at home and require professional tooth scaling and root planing to do so effectively. This may be done at our surgery over several appointments. To ensure the procedure is pain-free, we can use local anaesthetic to numb your gums before scaling for your comfort.

Brushing & Flossing Essentials

The basics of brushing and interdental cleaning to maintain healthy teeth and gums:

Brush correctly: Use a soft-bristle toothbrush at a 45° angle, brushing in gentle circular motions for at least two minutes—covering outer, inner, and chewing surfaces. Also, lightly brush your tongue to reduce bacteria and freshen breath.
Choose the right tools: Soft-bristle or electric toothbrushes are ideal. Manual brushes require proper technique to avoid enamel wear.
Floss daily: Wrap about 30 cm of dental floss around your fingers, guiding it gently between teeth in a C-shape to clean below the gum line without damaging delicate tissues.
Interdental cleaning: Use floss, interdental brushes, or water flossers—especially if you have tight contacts, braces, or dental work—to remove plaque from areas your brush can't touch.

Why It Matters

Oral Hygiene Isn't Just About Your Teeth—It's About Your Entire Health

Prevent decay and gum disease: Regular brushing and interdental cleaning drastically reduce plaque, a major cause of cavities and gum inflammation.
Health ripple effects: Poor oral hygiene has been linked with serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, and even cancer.
Skin and overall wellness: A balanced oral microbiome may benefit skin health—as poor oral balance can contribute to skin issues like inflammation and acne.
Proactive prevention: Biannual professional check-ups and cleanings help catch issues early and eliminate hard-to-remove tartar.

Why Professional Dental Cleaning Makes a Difference

Beyond brushing: Even with a consistent home routine, professional cleaning removes stubborn tartar and deeply embedded plaque before it harms your oral health.
Trusted advice: At South Tweed Dental, we tailor a cleaning schedule—typically every six months—or more often for individuals facing gum or implant-related issues.
Technique refinement: We demonstrate effective brushing and flossing methods, helping you avoid abrasion or gum injury due to overly aggressive cleaning.

Check-up and Clean

Prevention is the key to keeping teeth healthy while minimising chances of decay, disease and infections. Diagnosing dental problems at an early stage is essential as it means we can fix the problem before it worsens and ensures you keep a happy smile for life.

Having a check-up and professional clean every 6 months is quick, simple and will assist in preventing any nasty surprises like tooth decay or gum disease. A professional clean will remove plaque, calculus deposits, coffee/cigarette stains and the professional fluoride will help prevent decay and reduce sensitivity.
